The surface studies network was launched by a series of events in Lancaster in May 2013:
- an international interdisciplinary seminar on Theorising Surfaces (24 May)
- an international art exhibition, Surfaces in the Making (23 May - 1 June)
- a workshop with Lancaster academics working on surfaces (23 May)
These events were funded by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the Department of English and Creative Writing and the Department of Sociology, Lancaster University.

Theorising Surfaces: An Interdisciplinary Seminar

The seminar brought together international academics and artists and aimed to initiate a network of scholars working in ‘surface studies’ and to establish a set of comparative theoretical co-ordinates for this emerging field.
